Marriage License

Michigan Marriage License Requirements:

The Basics

• Your marriage license must be obtained from the County Clerk’s Office in the county in which either you or your fiancé resides.

• Nonresidents of Michigan who wish to be married in Michigan should apply in the county where their wedding will take place.

• Either you or your fiancé must apply for your marriage license in person.

• There is a three-day waiting period from the time you apply until your license is issued. The license is valid for 33 days from the date of application.

What to Bring

• Identification: Requirements vary by county; many counties require that you present a full-size, certified birth certificate and a valid driver’s license or Michigan state I.D. card.

• Applicants must be able to provide their birth name as well as their mother’s and father’s full birth names and dates of birth. In some counties, you will need to know the city and state of your parents’ birth.

• Money: The cost for a marriage license in most counties is $20 ($30 for non-Michigan residents). Some municipalities accept cash only, so cal ahead.

• Proof of Age: Eighteen is the legal age for marrying without parental consent; there are special restrictions for persons ages 16 or 17 who wish to marry.
